Intersex

Intersex

Historically, the word intersex was used to describe a person's 'condition' of being born neither male nor female. Worldwide, around 1.7% of persons are born intersex.
Intersex Causes

Being intersex is a natural variety, not a disease or condition. Being intersex might result from:
    • Some intersex characteristics can be inherited genetically (passed from one generation to the next in a family)
    • alterations to an androgen receptor gene
    • Exposure to natural or synthetic hormones occurs throughout embryo development.
    • Y gene sex-determining region missing or misplaced (SRY).
    • Other hereditary abnormalities result in aberrant hormone levels related to genital development.

Intersex surgery

Parents feel distressed when they discover their child is intersex. However, by consulting with Dr. Goutam Guha, parents and families of intersex individuals can gain recommendations on certain surgeries that may be beneficial for them. He uses Gender-affirming surgery to alleviate the symptoms of gender identity concerns.
Gender-Affirming Surgery - Gender-affirming surgery, also known as sex reassignment surgery (SRS) or confirmation surgery, is a surgical operation or procedure that alters a transgender or non-binary person's physical appearance and functional abilities to match the sexual identity they feel mostly.

Surgery to change a female's gender to a male includes –
    • Bilateral mastectomy;
    • Complete hysterectomy
    • Scrotoplasty (the construction of a scrotum)
    • Phalloplasty (the construction of the penis)
    • Ring metoidioplasty (to lengthen the urethra)
    • Vaginectomy (to close the vaginal canal)
    • Reconstruction of the genitalia with a metoidioplasty (a surgical procedure that permits a physician to create a phallus from the clitoris).

Surgeries to create female genitalia include

    • Clitoroplasty (the construction of a clitoris)
    • Prostatectomy (the removal of the prostate)
    • Labiaplasty (the creation of labia from scrotum skin)
    • Urethroplasty (the reconstruction of the urethra)
    • Orchiectomy (testicle removal)
    • Penectomy (removal of the penis) is frequently performed concurrently with vaginoplasty, and a clitoral hood is typically built from the glans penis.
    • Vaginoplasty (the formation of a vaginal canal using penile tissue or a colon graft)
